Garry's Story

All I could think of is ‘how do I move forward when a massive system is against me?’   After years of putting my life on the line to serve my country surely I had the right to social housing?  Instead I ended up destitute and suicidal.

Soldiering On Awards 2016

We’re proud and delighted that our Military Advocate, Peter Glover, was nominated for the prestigious Soldiering On Awards in the Family Values Award category.

The nomination was particularly significant in that it came from five of Peter’s clients. Please read some of the positive comments put forward by his clients about the advocacy support Pete has provided and how that has helped them.

The Soldiering On Awards ceremony took place on Friday 22nd April 2016 and, although Peter was not the eventual winner, it was a great achievement for him to have been shortlisted.

About Military Advocacy

When military personnel are discharged from the armed forces they can find it hard to access the services and support they need to begin and maintain a new life in the civilian community.

We have found that high quality, person-centred advocacy, fully understanding of the needs of veterans and those in transition from military to civilian life, can greatly help to improve quality of life by providing essential support when trying to access and engage with local, regional and national agencies and service providers.

Military advocacy can also support veterans who are in prison or detained under the mental health act.

Not sure what advocacy is, or how an advocate can help?  Find out more.

In May 2015, seAp was invited to become a member of Cobseo, demonstrating our long term commitment to supporting veterans, service leavers and their families. We are proud to have received this recognition of our military advocacy work.

How can we help you?

Leaving the military, for whatever reason, can be tough. How do you find all the services and support you need to begin, or get back to, your life in the civilian community?

For some, it can be complicated and you, or members of your family, might benefit from a little extra support. It might be sorting out your housing or benefits, sorting things out with the NHS or getting one agency talking to another about how to improve your situation.

We also work to uphold the promise of the MOD Armed Forces Covenant, aiming to ensure that veterans receive the recognition and fair treatment they deserve, without disadvantage.

seAp currently provides a specialist Military Advocacy Service in the Thames Valley area. This was funded by The Royal British Legion from 2014 to 2016. If you live in Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire or Berkshire, you can get one-to-one advocacy support from our local trained advocacy team either via the telephone or by making an appointment to see an advocate.

We have also launched a new Military Advocacy Service in Plymouth and hope to be offering similar services in other areas in the near future.

seAp Military Advocacy Services are part funded by the Chancellor using LIBOR funds.

Benefits to other military support organisations and charities

seAp seeks opportunities to develop this specialist area of advocacy further and to work closely with those involved with other military focused organisations which support armed forces personnel and veterans. Benefits of working in partnership with seAp include:

  • Your organisation will be able to offer independent advocacy to the service men and women you work with.
  • By making advocacy available, you will be offering a more complete and holistic service.
  • Advocacy support can lead to long-term improvements in an individual’s confidence and help them feel empowered to take control of their lives.
  • Advocacy support can help the people you work with to achieve their goals and get the outcomes they desire in a way that works for them.
  • Improved outcomes for service men and women will help to enhance the reputation of your organisation.
