South of England Advocacy Projects My CHOiCE

MY CHOiCE Advocacy Services is an East Sussex-wide advocacy service, which supports adults with a learning disability through the provision of a range of advocacy projects to:

  • People with a mild learning disability living independently and/or who are not eligible for specialist learning disability services from the local authority (funded by BILD)
  • Parents with a learning disability whose children may be subject to Child Protection proceedings (funded by Comic Relief)
  • People living in a long-stay institution in Hastings, which will be closing over the next three years. This service is provided through a contract with Sutton and Merton Primary Care Trust. The advocate is supporting residents to consider their options for a future move into a home in the community, and has supported people to access new opportunities off-site and to develop their self-advocacy skills
  • A spot purchase contract with the Hastings & Rother Independent Living Team, to provide independent advocacy support to one person who has an acquired brain injury
  • People supported by private care providers. This includes a contract to provide independent advocacy support to people with autism or asperger’s syndrome who live in two homes in Hastings, a contract to support two people in their role as house representatives at a Service User Involvement Committee and a contract to facilitate an advocacy group in a large residential home
  • Service users from Hastings & Rother, who come together to discuss their views of statutory services provided by the local authority and any other issues which may affect them or their peers. This is a project called Voices For Change and the group has been influential in raising the profile of people with learning disabilities to those who develop and oversee local services and has representatives attending a number of key groups and meetings including the Regional and National Valuing People forum.

If you would like to talk to MY CHOiCE about any of these services or to discuss future service provision please do not hesitate to contact us.
