Peer Advocates
Peer Advocates are people who are or have been service users themselves. Their unique experience and knowledge make them an invaluable part of the Advocacy Team. Mental Health Advocacy deliver a comprehensive training program for Peer Advocates, jointly written and delivered by experienced Advocates, Peer Advocates and Consultant Service Users. The only stipulation is that the person attending the course feels it will move them forward in their own recovery.
There are various opportunities for those who have had direct experience of mental health services to volunteer within the service:
- as Peer Advocates,
- in administrative roles, and
- as trainers and experiential expert consultants
The Peer Advocacy project trains and supports people recovering from mental health distress to be teamed with professional advocates to provide advocacy support. This has been a step forward for many of our Peer Advocates to go on and gain employment with other organisations.
